Teaching Your Nervous System to Feel Safe Again

The Chair

Superpower · Trains Your Body to Find Calm on Its Own

If you live with chronic illness, anxiety, or depression, your nervous system has probably been on high alert for a long time. Your heart races at small things. Your muscles never fully let go. Sleep is shallow. Your body forgets what "safe" feels like.

The Chair was built to help it remember.

Chapter One

A music therapist's idea: a bath of sound

In Norway in the late 1960s, educator and therapist Olav Skille was working with children with severe disabilities. Many lived in constant tension, their muscles tight, their bodies unable to settle. Together with music therapist Juliette Alvin, he wondered: what if music could be felt through the body, not just heard?

Skille built a bed with speakers inside and played low, deep tones through it along with music. He first called it a "music bath." The children relaxed in ways nothing else had achieved. In 1982 he formally defined the method: low-frequency sound waves between 30 and 120 Hz, blended with music, used for healing. He named it vibroacoustic therapy.

The idea spread to hospitals in England, Finland, Estonia, and the U.S. In England, a hospital ran a dedicated vibroacoustic unit from 1987. Over the decades it was studied for pain, muscle tension, sleeplessness, anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, Parkinson's disease, and high blood pressure.

Your Neuro Spa is a modern descendant, developed by a research lab in Montreal. It sends multi-frequency acoustic vibrations through your body, synchronized to music, in a private, cocoon-like chair.

Chapter Two

What happens inside your body

1

Your muscles let go.

Low-frequency vibration travels deep into muscle tissue and helps release tension and spasm you may not even know you're holding.

2

Pain signals quiet down.

Gentle vibration stimulates pressure receptors in the skin and muscle. These signals compete with pain signals on their way to the brain, which is one reason vibration can ease pain.

3

Your nervous system shifts gears.

Music and vibration engage hearing and touch. The Chair is designed to support parasympathetic “rest and digest” activity—the branch that includes the vagus nerve—and a felt sense of safety.

4

Circulation improves.

Early vibroacoustic practitioners consistently observed better blood flow in the arms and legs.

5

Your mind follows your body.

A sense of comfort and safety can help ease vigilance, making room for quieter thoughts and restorative rest.

Chapter Three

Why we call it a nervous system trainer

Music, rhythmic vibration, and supportive positioning engage the senses together, designed to support a felt sense of safety and a shift from stress toward calm.

Repeated sessions make space to practice that shift.

A 2025 study of another low-frequency sound system measured heart-rate variability changes consistent with increased cardiac vagal activity after a session.

Chapter Four

What the research shows

In a 1997 evaluation of vibroacoustic music for hospitalized patients, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health reported meaningful drops in tension, anxiety, and physical symptoms. A randomized study of women recovering from gynecological surgery found vibroacoustic therapy reduced pain, anxiety, and depression. In one fibromyalgia study, patients' scores on a standard fibromyalgia impact questionnaire dropped dramatically.

An Honest Note

The research is still young and studies are small, but the direction is consistent: less tension, less pain, more calm.

Your Session at Studio 7:14

There's nothing to do but receive.

Settle into the chair, put on headphones, and close your eyes. As music plays, you feel it move gently through your back, legs, and chest. Sessions last about 50 minutes. It's the perfect final step after a sauna or hyperbaric session.

~50Minutes per session

Chapter Five

Who it's designed for

Stress & Anxiety

People living with anxiety, depression, PTSD, or chronic stress.

Pain & Tension

Those with fibromyalgia, chronic pain, or muscle tension that never fully releases.

Autoimmune

People with autoimmune conditions, where stress so often fuels flares.

Cancer Care

Anyone in or after cancer treatment who needs deep rest and relief from fear and fatigue.

Poor Sleepers

Poor sleepers who need to remember what deep rest feels like.

Before Your Session

A note on safety

The Chair is gentle, but talk with your doctor first if you:

  • have a pacemaker
  • have had a recent blood clot
  • have epilepsy
  • are pregnant
  • have had recent surgery

If you ever feel dizzy or uncomfortable, simply stop your session.
